The WASSCE aggregate is a single number used to compare candidates for tertiary admission, and it is calculated from six subjects rather than from everything a candidate sat. Understanding which six is most of the battle.
The arithmetic itself is trivial. The selection rule is what trips people up, and it is the reason two candidates with identical grade slips can arrive at different aggregates.
Grades carry points
Each grade from A1 down to F9 corresponds to a number, with A1 as one and the numbers rising as performance falls.
Because the points rise as grades fall, a lower aggregate is the stronger result. That is the opposite of most scoring systems people meet, and it causes real confusion — a candidate told they have "a good 12" sometimes assumes it is worse than an 18.
The core subjects
The core subjects count regardless of how a candidate performed in them. There is no discarding a weak core grade in favour of a stronger elective, which is why core performance carries more weight than students expect while they are choosing what to revise.
For tertiary admission the usual treatment is that English Language and Core Mathematics always count, and the better of Integrated Science and Social Studies takes the third core slot. Institutions do vary, so confirm against the requirements of the programme you are applying to.
Three core subjects plus your three best electives, six subjects in total. A lower total is better. If you sat four electives, the weakest is set aside — and forgetting that is the single most common miscalculation.
The three best electives
From the electives, the three best grades count. A candidate who sat four benefits from that: the weakest is set aside automatically.
This is the step most often got wrong, and usually not through bad arithmetic. It is got wrong by including the subject the candidate feels attached to — the one they enjoyed, or worked hardest at — rather than the one that actually scored better.
Working it out
Add the three core points and the three best elective points. The result is the aggregate, running from six upward.

That candidate's aggregate is 13: two plus four plus one from the core, and one plus two plus three from the best three electives.
Where students lose points without noticing
Two patterns account for most of the avoidable damage. The first is treating a core subject as secondary because it is not the subject the candidate intends to study. A weak core grade cannot be dropped, so it sits in the total permanently.
The second is sitting a fourth elective badly. A fourth elective can only help — the weakest is discarded — but only if it is prepared for properly. A candidate who spreads revision thinly across four electives and weakens all of them has made the total worse, not better.
Resits and how they are treated
Candidates who sit again often assume the better grade automatically replaces the earlier one for admission purposes. Institutions differ on this: some combine results across sittings, some do not, and some accept a combination only under stated conditions.
Confirm the position with the specific institution before planning a resit around it. It is a question with a definite answer, and it is worth having that answer before spending a year on the assumption.
Why the aggregate alone decides nothing
Programmes set subject requirements as well as cut-off points. A qualifying aggregate with the wrong subject combination will not secure a place on a programme that requires specific electives, and no amount of aggregate strength substitutes for a missing prerequisite.
Check the requirement before you compare the number. It is the filter that runs first.
Check it by hand once
Work the calculation through on paper a single time. It takes two minutes, and it means that when a calculator, an adviser or a relative gives you a different number, you know to ask why rather than assuming they are right.
It also makes the next conversation easier: someone who understands how their own aggregate was built asks much better questions about programme choices.
What to do with the number
Compare it against the published cut-offs for the last two or three years, not just the most recent, and treat those as history rather than prediction. Then build a choice list with a genuine spread — because the aggregate tells you where you stand, not where you will land.
