MEXT Japanese Government Scholarship

Set per category and per year, with age and qualification limits that differ between the undergraduate and research tracks. Applications run either through the Japanese embassy in the applicant's country or directly through a Japanese university.

The MEXT scholarship is the Japanese government's scholarship for international students. It runs in distinct tracks - undergraduate, research, and specialised training - each with its own eligibility rules.

Two routes, different calendars

The embassy-recommended route and the university-recommended route open at different times and are assessed differently. Applicants should decide early which they are pursuing, because the preparation is not interchangeable.

Japanese is not always required

A number of programmes are taught in English, particularly at postgraduate level. Language study is generally part of the award regardless, which is worth factoring into the time commitment.
